New Year, also called Tet. U.S. Generals ordered a cease-fire for 36 hours to allow the Vietnamese to celebrate
the Tet holiday.

The
Tet Offensive began at the Marine Base at Khe Sahn and resulted in 1,100 U.S.
troops killed and 3,000 wounded. The South Vietnamese Army experienced losses
of 2,300 soldiers killed and thousands more wounded. The opposing forces had estimated
losses of 40,000 – 50,000.
