In
1965, the Viet Cong (also known as the National Liberation Front or NLF) attacked
two U.S. Army installations in South Vietnam.
As a result, Johnson ordered sustained bombing missions known as
Operation Rolling Thunder. Although the campaign was intended to last eight weeks, it lasted until October, 1968.
